hey misty and andrew!
i was in barnes and noble today trying to remember what board game you said you were playing...was it catan? anyway, you made it sound fun for a game-lover like me. i'd love to hear more about it on the podcast.

misty, i also have an ashford joy wheel and i went ahead and purchased a freedom jumbo flyer for it last year at the 'stitches' yarn show. i have been carding up batts of cormo, silk and mohair and am learning to corespin. i use a light weight cotton string as a core. the resulting yarn is very lofty and light. definitely a fun way to use up all the fiber i have accumulated!

it is january and here in north carolina it has finally gotten down to the mid 20's F at night (at least for the last few nights). a couple of potted plants are still hanging in there...parsley and leeks! they are right next to the house so they must be enjoying a slightly warmer airspace than the rest of the pots and garden.
of course any pansies planted in the ground here will survive our winter and continue to give us color till it gets hot again.

happy new year to you both!

Many years ago here in Christchurch, NZ, my grandfather had a pet magpie. Along with doing mischievous things like tying people's shoelaces together when they weren't looking, there was a bit of garden "fun" too...

One day when my grandmother was replanting her tomatoes, she looked back along the row she'd been planting and the magpie had been pulling each of the plants out, and waiting until she noticed. She chased off the bird and started replanting them all, only to find he'd started pulling them up from the other end of the row. Eventually she started shaking pepper around the base of each plant, and the magpie started kicking the plants out of the ground instead. Cheeky bastard!

I've heard about Sanitarium's 'natural' peanut butter which is found in the health food isle and is 100% peanuts, no salt or sugar. It might be cheaper than from your CSA but then again things in the health food isle are usually priced pretty high. Sanitarium is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church which bothers some people and impresses others.

We had a tricky ANZAC Day here in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our normal ceremony and memorial would have taken place in what's referred to as the "Red Zone": the cordoned-off part of the central city that's still quite damaged after our earthquakes. Still, you keep going and make do with what you've got - not a lot of choice otherwise, really.

Really looking forward to spending time with my fiancée in Kentucky this month, though :-)

Please don't chop me out of the intro. It's always surprising to hear my voice.

Loved Anzac Day this year. I've really gotten into it as I learn more about Australia and its history. Plus there is the "tradition" of Collingwood Magpies playing against the Essendon Bombers. Go Pies!

I hope you get an alert when someone comments on an old show, otherwise you'll never see this! 8-)

I'm working my way back to front and cannot find the correct file for barncast 174 - the link plays #175 although the file is labeled 174. I hope the original barncast wasn't overwritten.

Thanks! GFL rocks!

Been a listener for a few years and like the new format!

Very interesting discussion about taxation and different government requirements.

Since you're changing the show to focus on oversees issues, rename the Farm Phone, the "Foreign" Phone, or the "Foreign Affairs" Phone.

"Farm Phone Rocks", I mean, the "Foreign Phone Rocks".

Good afternoon!

Enjoyed the podcast...even if I did seem to go on and on about the snow. I fell for the first time last night getting off the bus - didn't hurt myself, but it still smarted!

Misty asked how far Minneapolis is from St. Paul - here's the answer: The distance between the two downtowns is approximately 8-10 miles depending where you go from and to.

I loved this episode of your podcast - especially because it was about Christmas trees. I love Christmas trees. I've never been one to have a real one - although David's parents always has a real tree. My family always had fake trees. I've apparently become quite the collector of "fake" trees. I first became enchanted by fake trees when I visited a school friend's home in kindgergarten and they had up a silver aluminum tree with blue decorations and the wheel of color. Since I've been an adult - I've collected a number of fake trees: silver, blue, red, modern art type trees, flat against the wall trees, LCD lighted trees, ceramic trees, etc. You get the drift (and not snow drift mind you)...I love fake trees! I would love to have a larger home where I could display all my trees during the holidays. Anyway, thanks for a fabulous holiday podcast episode! Happy holidays!

I loved this episode of your podcast – especially because it was about Christmas trees. I love Christmas trees. I’ve never been one to have a real one – although David’s parents always has a real tree. My family always had fake trees. I’ve apparently become quite the collector of “fake” trees. I first became enchanted by fake trees when I visited a school friend’s home in kindgergarten and they had up a silver aluminum tree with blue decorations and the wheel of color. Since I’ve been an adult – I’ve collected a number of fake trees: silver, blue, red, modern art type trees, flat against the wall trees, LCD lighted trees, ceramic trees, etc. You get the drift (and not snow drift mind you)…I love fake trees!
